The state of play in the US under the Bush Administration from a critical or radical perspective:

Monte Woverton
Notice what is missing? The problem of the problem of detainee abuse at Guantánamo involving physical or in-depth psychological abuse--- eg., sleep deprivation, deprivation of water, heat, dogs etc--- that had been authorized at the highest levels in Washington. An account of the fight from the inside against this policy in the New Yorker.
Some of these detainees are not even terrorists According to this Report less than half of the detainees are accused of committing any hostile act against the USA or its allies. Thanks to the excellent No Right Turn for the links.

Guantanamo who cares?Well I do but I am in the minority. The Bush administration has the populace so scared over the issue of terrorism, most people would like to see the inmates strung up by their toes. One has only to look at the main stream opinion on our own home grown alleged terrorist, David Hicks, most of the chattering class would like to be on the firing squad. What does amaze me is why people think this is something new.The British were torturing, starving, and executing Boers in South Africa, and the Irish any where they could find them long before Guantanomo.Anyone remember Mai Ly?the list goes on.
The only thing I don't believe about Guantanamo,is that the higher echelons of the Bush administration didn't know what was/is going on there. They have made such a fiasco of their war on terror, and are in so deep they will follow through this crusade no matter the consequences. The planet is on the brink of a disaster, that will make anything that happened in the last century look tame.
