It's called dog whistle politics. You talk to the mainstream in a reassuring voice though the tabloid media, whilst making suggestions and gestures to the dark side of the nation the meanings of which are well understood by those on your conservative side of politics.

John Howard, the Australian Prime Minister, is a master of this kind of politics. He plays a cool hand.

The cruder sentiments as critically represented here are left to others on the street or on the media to voice. They have been given permission by the conservative political elites to speak out against political correctness. They then proceed to speak and act out their hostility.

The more sophisticated argue like this.

Hello Gary,

I just came across your blog today. Thank you for the link to my comic. However, I hope you haven't misinterpreted the meaning of it. It was NOT to promote racist attitudes, but rather to show the absurdity of it, and the ignorance that quite often fuels it.

Hopefully this is nothing but a simple misunderstanding (and if I have mistaken your statements, then I sincerely apologize) but, if you have a problem with someone's work then you should take the time to contact them and ask for some clarification, before taking a swing at them. Afterall, I've taken the time to contact you.

Remember, interpretation NEVER supercedes intent. And I know EXACTLY what it was I was trying to express through the comic; and it is not what you say it is.

If I am free to speak out "against political correctness", which I am (though I'm not), then I would just come out and do so, and not waste all my time veiling it in "humour".

I think in the end, you'll find that we have more in common than you think :) Hopefully, I've been able to put your mind at ease on this.

Cheers,
Kevin Robertson

Kevin,
tis a great image that you have about Cronulla on your very visual weblog. It captures the reclaim the beach nicely.

Gary... I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE. I completely misunderstood what you meant in your statement. Please ignore my previous comment.

See! We DO have much in common :)

Take care,
Kevin Robertson

Kevin,
I thought that you image was great. I really did think that it represented the cruder Australian sentiments about 'the reclaim the beach' very well indeed.

Much better than this one by Gable.

Alas my post was ambiguous. It did imply that you concurred with the racist sentiments assocaited with reclaim the beach, as opposed to you being critical of racism.

My apologies. I have changed the post to clear up any misunderstanding about my interpretation of your excellent cartoon.

I was too quick and I wasn't thinking.

No problem.

Thanks for taking the time to adjust your post. Again, my sincerest apologies for the confusion and my initial comments.

I'm glad you enjoyed the cartoon :)

Cheers,
Kevin Robertson
