If there are diverse kinds of knowledge and ways of knowing place, then we need to learn to value the different ways each of us sees a single place that is significant, but differently so, for each perspective.

big energy rules « Previous | |Next »
January 13, 2006

The six governments responsible for nearly half the world's greenhouse gas emissions will rely on industry to shoulder most of the burden of offsetting global warming. But Big Energy isn't too keen on bearing the burden of the ecological consequences of its reliance on fossil fuels.

It's a good joke, isn't it.

You cannot address climate change and global warming at the expense of economic growth is the refrain from Big Energy and its government boosters and supporters. That is unacceptable. So is any cut in the use of fossil fuels or emission reduction targets.

..isn't this bitter-funny logic a good example of our current alienation from the political institutions?.. or, just of the power the industry has to legitimate itself not as the culprit but as the savior...

It sure is. The power of big energy aligned with big government in the US and Australia.

The latter is just what the public relations people wanted.

I will not be crossing my fingers for big energy to become a good corporate citizen around global warming.

Responsibility is not a word in their lexicon--other than responsibility to make a profit for shareholders.
