Sydney's commercial fishing fleet lost their businesses in January when the NSW Government shut down fishing in the harbour after announcing the fish were too toxic to eat.
Prawn.jpg According to the 7.30 Report Homebush Bay in the upper reaches of Sydney Harbour is Sydney Harbour's dioxin Ground Zero. Homebush Bay is often described as one of the most contaminated sites in the world.

The hope has long been the contamination here in the soil, the water and the river bed would stay in this small bay. That hope is misplaced as the toxicity from the products made by Union Carbide on the banks of Homebush Bay is spreading through the harbour was made clear in January.

Fish and prawns from the harbour were found to have dangerously high levels of dioxins - the legacy of decades of industrial pollution upstream. Dioxins are a group of toxic long-lasting organic compounds that accumulate in the body through the main pathway of food. Most toxic forms are known to be harmful in the tiniest amounts. Mothers pass dioxin on to their children in the womb and via breast milk.

However, recreational anglers can still catch and eat fish from the harbour even though Sydneysiders who regularly eat harbour seafood have been found with sky-high levels of toxic dioxin chemicals in their blood.The the chemical cocktail in their system contains a very high proportion of the most dangerous dioxin - TCDD or tetrachlorodibenzo-para-dioxin.

The NSW Health Department initially refused to give the families of all 44 fishermen who had been licensed to fish commercially in the harbour a blood test. The NSW Government then reversed an earlier decision and now says that free blood testing will be available to those commercial fishermen and their families who want them.

I come from Sydney and have been following this story real close.

Government here is full of a bunch of sickos.

First they have covered up the poison since the 1980's, then when they finally have to adress the issue, an 'independant' expert panel advises that the fish are too toxic to eat.

After 5 months of serious agitation by the fishermen, they finally get blood tests (paid for by a national news organisation) government sets up another 'independant' review panel, which will tell us- guess what- the fishermen are not poisoned.

THIS GOVERNMENT IS ITSELF TOXIC AND POLLUTED.

It has just emerged that they artificially inflated the cost of filtering all the road tunnels 10 fold- to stop putting filters in the tunnels. The real cost, plus maintaing the scrubbers for 30 years is less then the amount they have spent on all the government spin, inquiries, reviews and once again 'independant' expert panels.

Given how the Labor Party (union workers party) has been taken over by organised criminals, it shouldn't come as any surprise that they are trying to poison us- even when it is cheaper not to poison us!

Little grots.

They even did a deal and passed legislation a decade ago so that the multinational companies couldn't be sued for disposing dioxin and other contaminants in our harbour.

We are lead to believe that the workers party woke up one morning and thought it would be a great gift to the multinationals to ensure that workers cannot sue them.

Nice hey- just like Orwell's pigs.

The closer to the trough the longer the snouts and the shorter the memory!

I was in Sydney around the time of the toxic prawn story broke.

I travelled from the airport to Ryde and back again in the car, and I couldn't help noticing that there was minimal ventilation in the tunnels I travelled through.

Hell, you even paid to use them and still no decent filtration.

So both the water and the air in Sydeny is toxic. Lovely.
