I've reached the limits of my Zeiss lens on the point and shoot Sony R1. I cannot get in too close to a subject, as you can see here, with this shot:
Gary Sauer-Thompson, fading roses, Victor Harbor, 2008
Pity about the out of focus, as I loved this shot. You can see the difference with Murfomurf's rose or tulip or coffee rose. She is able to get up close to flowers and stay in focus.
Another example of the limitations of the Zeiss lens:
Gary Sauer-Thompson, pink rose, Victor Harbor, 2008
Overcoming that limitation means shifting from a point and shoot to a DSLR and a macro lens if want to do close ups of flowers as Murfomurf is able to do. I'll just live with the limitations in the short-term.
I need to put the money into developing Thought-factory-net, improving my computers, backup storage, and remote access, and acquiring some decent photographic software to process my photographs. That will gobble up the money in no time.

Hey- interesting blogathon! I found you had referenced some of my pix on Flickr- thx. You didn't notice they were taken with a tiny 8yr-old point n shoot which actually has a nice Zeiss lens! And fancy you being an ex-policy wonk! I have a funny connection to that, too. I've been a health researcher on and off for 30 years. Always HATED health "policy" wankers with a vengeance because I thought they were just jargonistic wordsmiths with no idea of what was wanted or needed. I vowed never to get mixed up with them. I tried to argue for performance standards in the state health system- got quashed by vain doctors who insisted their death rates looked worse on paper than they actually were, etc. Now I find that in the midst of doing a Masters in Public Health that I'm going to have to do the main units on policy because I can't resist! I guess I can get all fired up again while I'm studying them and just have to calm myself down again afterwards! LOL! No one's ever going to give me another job anyway, so who cares if I have radical views vegeing out with the washing up!
