It would appear that sex offenders are perceived as so great a threat that the law and order conservatives hold that sex offenders should never be released from prison. If they are released under some form of supervision, then they are hold that the community needs to know who these sex offenders are and where they live so that they can protect their children.

That most sex offences are committed by a family member or close friend-- not a stranger--- makes no difference to these conservatives. They need the Other ---the pedophile as stranger---to justify their fear and to maintain their moral outrage about the sexualization of children and the teenage nudity on the internet. The politics of the law and order is about managing public fear.

For outraged moral conservatives, such as Hetty Johnston, the images of naked teenagers taken by Bill Henson are seen as 'handing our children on a bloody plate to pedophiles'---even though the Classification Board regards them as mild and safe for children to view. They are not porn. They have a PG rating.

Gary,
by all accounts the police have backed off as no charges will be laid against Henson and Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery. So it is unlikely that a trial will proceed.

The persecution was political. The odd thing here was that it was established by a small lobby group and given wider creedence through an op-ed. Representatives probably need to be reminded that they come up for election every three years and aren't campaigning permanently, so they can ignore stupidity and calls for stupid action even if it is printed in a major newspaper.

pam,
it was a campaign by the conservative movement that was for sure.

There was also a lot of outraged conservative anti-artist sentiment mixed up in the campaign. What was missed in this campaign was the way that pop or consumer culture sexualized kids.

Peter Garrett came out of the events badly. He just keeps getting worse.

Not always,

So in some places, teachers clock up over 80 percent of child pornography origination, it is inevitable, showers, changing rooms, it is a nu-tech thing, so what you have is an unavoidable issue of disproportionate crime etc.

It's called access to victims.

Not always

If child pornography use is a crime, and in Oz & Japan, that may be equally up in the air, but if the millions of hits to that Croatian nook, are anything to go by,

Little of that had family members involved, because, well, it just wasn't possible, though I'm sure additional (unknown) offending will 50/50 it.

"That most sex offences are committed by a family member or close friend"

I sometimes think the teachers unions cooked that one up, it depends how or if you define crime.

Also the reportage is whacko, for example a child help line in the UK will clock teachers as 50.50 with co-students, I find that unlikely,

Co-students have to be doing a lot more, it is not possible for teachers ( in actuality) to level peg with the student body.

Some stuff gets reported more than other stuff. Indecent assault between youngsters doesn't go anywhere as a rule, least of all as a stat, and if it does, it is 'bullying'.

Or a type of sex crime that doesn't really count, and at times, as they dig for bits of children at Haut de Garenne, it just simply doesn't count period.

And, if Oz, feels picked on, there are few places, that have not been up to their neck in child abuse, in the last decade or so

Leak must have been having a bad day. What's a 'warninig?' Racial slur on a retired cricket player who can't keep his txting under control, perhaps?

Leunig, rather...
