This is a cosmic close-up of the eastern Veil Nebula. The Veil Nebula itself is a large supernova remnant, the expanding debris cloud from the death explosion of a massive star.

It is another example of how the new generation of ground- and space-based telescopes has created an explosion of images for us to explore. I notice that The Smithsonian has joined the joined Flickr community and is posting images from the he Chandra X-ray Observatory.
