If there are diverse kinds of knowledge and ways of knowing place, then we need to learn to value the different ways each of us sees a single place that is significant, but differently so, for each perspective.

Tim Blair Watch « Previous | |Next »
June 4, 2003

In this weeks The continuing crisis column in The Bulletin Tim Blair writes:

"Is the ABC biased? You tell me. If you're a lefty, you'll say no. If you're a conservative, you'll say yes. Which essentially establishes that, yes, the ABC is biased."

I just love the black and white division of the world. It is so nice and tidy. Everything is in its place and properly ordered.

Some lefties can say yes. The ABC is biased. It is left liberal.

But why spoil a good quip. It's the style that matters.

We might rephrase Tim's own argument:

"Is Tim Blair biased? You tell me. If you're a lefty, you'll say yes. If you're a conservative, you'll say no. Which essentially establishes that, yes, Tim Blair is biased."

Which is about as stupid and meaningless as Tim's original statement. There is bias in everything and everyone, the only question is in what direction and to what extent.

Another question:

some biases are worse than others. Hatred of all Muslems is worse than a prejudice against instant coffee.
