If there are diverse kinds of knowledge and ways of knowing place, then we need to learn to value the different ways each of us sees a single place that is significant, but differently so, for each perspective.

'In the Mood for Love' « Previous | |Next »
June 3, 2006

I've just watched this on video---Wong Kar-wai's 'In the Mood for Love' (2000). It is very minimalist---tis mood and atmosphere without much of a narrative that is bathed in the evocations of popular musical culture.

It left me puzzled: was it a film about sexual desire or alternatively, a film about moral restraint? Moral restraint and internalized repression in Hong Kong in the 1960s is my guess. I've seen no other Wong Kar-wai film.

Now, you can see "2046". It's a sequel for this one. An other great Kar Wai's movie is "Happy toghether" or "The Buenos Aires Affaire". I think he's one of the best directors of this times. Enjoy it.

If Antonioni would have had a son who directed film, it could have been Wong Kar-Wai. His movies are often related to chance and misfortune in life, missed occasions... as in In the Mood for Love.

The director often film his stories in a contemplative and languish way as in "In the Mood for Love", "Days of Being Wild", "2046", "The Hand" (short film in the movie "Eros").

Though, he sometimes adopts a very dynamic style (wide angles, camera on shoulder, short-cuts in the editing). If you're interested to see this part of his filmography, give a try to "Chungking Express" (maybe his masterpiece - one of Tarentino's favorites), "Fallen Angels" or "Happy Together"...

To finish :-P, I would like to mention the short-film he made for BMW with Clive Owen. It can be seen as a summary of his whole career and filmography. This film is particularly well crafted.
