If there are diverse kinds of knowledge and ways of knowing place, then we need to learn to value the different ways each of us sees a single place that is significant, but differently so, for each perspective.

the old uglies « Previous | |Next »
May 6, 2007

I see that the attacks on Julia Gillard, the Deputy Leader of the ALP, continue. Not content with attacking this high-achieving professional woman because she is single, the ugly old male politicians are now attacking her because of her appearance: her hairstyle and jewellery.

These old uglies don't even see this gender politics as personal attacks. It's the violent conservative unconscious surfacing in reaction to female political authority. This authority is either ridiculed or undermined as interfering - it is never legitimate.

Spot on Gary. I was going to write exactly the same post, but I will just link instead. It makes me want to vomit. What is most shocking is that the uglies don't even see it as a problem.

Colin,
I see that Howard defends this kind of male attack on Gillard as a person.

With respect to Senator Heffernan's "deliberately barren" comments re Gillard Howard did not renounce the substance of Heffernan's comments.

As Ross Fitzgerald observes about Howard's responses:

So then it's not relevant that Gillard is unmarried and childless, but it is relevant that the PM is married with children. This is vintage Howard. It's dog whistle politics meets weasel words 101.

Howard and Heffernan("Howard without the spin") are playing with bigotry and prejudice around gender.

Fitzgerald says that the old uglies like Heffernan are 'channelling his master's voice'.

And don't forget the use these blokes made of Bronwyn Bishop - as stalking horse for the present PM -during the Downer Interregnum.

Most probably they now also express indignation at the position of women in Islamic societies!
